Driveway and Garage Floor Surfacing

Rubber Surfacing On Driveways And Garage Floors In Sudbury, Ontario

We pour dense, salt-proof rubber surfacing over pitted garage floors and cracked driveways across Greater Sudbury. The slab or asphalt you have stays in place, the pits and flaking are covered, and the new floor takes tires, snowblowers and dripping brine without breaking down. Every job is fully insured before the first tool comes off the truck.

Driveway and Garage Floor Surfacing details

Garage Floors In Sudbury Are Pitted By Salt Brine Every Winter

We cover the pits with a rubber surfacing floor that salt cannot attack. Two vehicles pull into a Sudbury garage every evening from December to March carrying slush and road salt, and the brine sits on the slab overnight. Concrete absorbs it, the water in the pores freezes, and by spring the floor is speckled with pits and a dusting of loose cement.

Rubber surfacing is a different material. Brine drains through it or dries off it, and the rubber does not react to salt. A garage floor usually gets black SBR rubber surfacing, three-eighths of an inch at the least and three-quarters at the most, which also quiets the garage and takes dropped tools without chipping.

Driveway Rubber Surfacing Bridges Cracks From Heaving Shield Fill

We pour over driveways that have cracked because they sit partly on bedrock and partly on frost-prone fill. Lots in the old city, from the West End to Minnow Lake to Copper Cliff, were graded onto whatever the Canadian Shield offered, and a driveway that spans rock and fill lifts unevenly every winter. Out in the Valley, around Chelmsford, Azilda and Val Caron, the deeper silty soils heave more evenly but they still heave.

Rubber surfacing bridges the hairline and static cracks that result and stays flexible through the freeze. A crack that is still opening every year is repaired first. Then the driveway rubber surfacing goes down over the asphalt or concrete, three-eighths or half an inch deep, in black SBR or a coloured EPDM top layer.

A Rubber Surfacing Driveway Drains, Grips And Shovels Cleanly

We pour driveways that stay usable through the worst of a Sudbury winter. Meltwater passes down through the rubber surfacing rather than glazing on top, so the walk between car and door is not a skating rink in March. The surface grips a boot when wet, and a plastic-edged shovel or a snowblower runs over it without catching.

Salt is fine on rubber surfacing, though far less is needed because there is much less ice. The old driveway becomes the base under the rubber surfacing, so there is no tear-out, no dumpster and no week without parking.

Before any of that, we grind or pressure wash the slab, strip any old sealer, paint or floor coating, remove oil stains and fill the cracks before any rubber surfacing is poured. A painted or sealed garage floor will not bond, so that layer comes off first; it is the single most common reason a rubber floor fails. The floor is primed, the mix is troweled to the depth written on the quote, and after two or three days the garage is back in use for vehicles.

Garage rubber surfacing pairs well with a gym or fitness floor in the same space, poured on the same day.
